Roles and responsibilities
Technician - Maintenance (Fitter)
- Complete maintenance of mechanical systems and equipment such as mills, Kiln, decolouriser, gear boxes, bucket elevator, conveyors, air slides, compressors, blowers, fans, stacker, reclaimers, utility and other plant machinery.
- Align, balance, position equipment and ensuring the lubrication schedule to meet operational specifications.
- Perform precision fitting, welding, bearing sping and assembly of machine parts.
- Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on mechanical equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Troubleshoot and repair mechanical failures in various systems and equipment.
- Replace worn-out or damaged parts such as bearings, gears, shafts, seals, airslides and other mechanical components.
- Diagnose issues, suggest, and implement solutions to optimize the mechanical performance of plant equipment.
- Ensure all equipment operates efficiently and in compliance with safety regulations.
- Adhere to safety protocols and ensure compliance with plant safety standards.
- Maintain detailed maintenance records, repair logs, and parts inventory. Document equipment malfunctions and corrective actions taken.
- Work closely with other technicians, engineers, and plant personnel to ensure smooth operations.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and management regarding maintenance schedules and any critical issues.
- Respond promptly to emergency breakdowns, minimizing downtime and production loss.
- Use specialized tools and techniques to repair mechanical failures quickly and efficiently.
- Able to perform welding, cutting, grinding and fabricating parts for machinery repairs as and when required.
- Assist in training less experienced staff as needed.
Desired candidate profile
1. Technical Expertise
- Mechanical Knowledge: Understanding of mechanical systems, such as HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), pumps, motors, and conveyors, as well as their maintenance and repair.
- Electrical Systems: Proficiency in troubleshooting electrical issues, working with circuits, fuses, switches, and understanding electrical schematics.
- Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems: Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including the maintenance of pumps, cylinders, and air compressors.
- Building Systems: Familiarity with building systems such as plumbing, electrical wiring, heating/cooling, and safety equipment.
2. Preventive Maintenance
- Scheduled Inspections: Performing routine inspections and preventive maintenance tasks to identify and address potential issues before they cause downtime.
- Equipment Upkeep: Ensuring that machinery, tools, and equipment are maintained in peak working condition to prevent breakdowns.
- Lubrication and Cleaning: Regularly lubricating machinery, cleaning components, and ensuring systems are functioning optimally.
3. Troubleshooting and Repair
- Problem Diagnosis: Quickly identifying mechanical, electrical, or systems faults and determining the appropriate repair methods.
- Repairs and Replacements: Performing necessary repairs or replacing faulty components such as belts, gears, electrical parts, or valves.
- Emergency Response: Responding to unexpected breakdowns, minimizing downtime, and restoring equipment to full functionality as quickly as possible.
4. Safety and Compliance
- Safety Protocols: Following workplace safety guidelines to prevent accidents while performing maintenance tasks. This includes wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and using tools safely.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring maintenance practices comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA).
- Lockout/Tagout (LOTO): Properly implementing LOTO procedures to ensure safe maintenance of machinery and equipment.
5. Equipment and Tools Knowledge
- Tool Handling: Skilled in using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic instruments for repairs and maintenance tasks.
- Calibration and Adjustments: Calibrating machinery and equipment for optimal performance, making adjustments as necessary to meet specific standards.
- Tool Maintenance: Maintaining tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working order and regularly inspected.
