Dairy Nutrition Consultant
Region: Michigan, Indiana, Ohio
Experience:
Prefer 2-3 years industry experience. Consulting experience is not a requirement but will be helpful in understanding and relating to our customer.
Ration Formulation: This position will discuss ration formulation options with the company. The nutritionist will need to relate to items ranging from diet NDF from forage quantities, protein sources and concentrations, carbohydrate sources for diets, trace mineral options and the CNCPS nutrition model calculations. The strength of our consulting group is that there is not a need to run the rations on a routine basis for consultants but the ability to discuss options is essential. This position will be responsible for oversight on and approving of diets for new consultants until they grow in their understanding of nutrition. Understanding ration balancing techniques, available additives, the fundamentals of the programs and the animals fed is crucial.
Product Formulation: This position is involved in and responsible for the formulation of products that are requested by the company. This responsibility involves verifying the use rates of ingredients and supplementation rates of nutrients to ensure that they comply with nutritional strategies and legal restrictions.
Experience with formulation software would be a benefit.
Dairy Records Evaluations: This position will be involved in the use of company record management. As part of this activity, this position will be active in interpretation of the results of the evaluations and interacting with the consulting group to troubleshoot issues and look for areas of improving and expanding the reporting of records. Previous experience with dairy records evaluations will be beneficial. Familiarity with Dairy Comp 305, DHI Plus and PC Dart will be a plus.
Computer Software: Microsoft Office Programs: Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint; Ration Balancer Software (Dalex is our preferred supplier); Dropbox. The ability to adapt to new software and transfer the technology to our consulting group is an important activity of this position.
Responsibilities:
Be responsive to the growing group of dairy consultants in the Northeast Region.
This involves:
- Phone and email support to troubleshoot issues they experience
- Computer information searches for data to support their consulting activities
- Ingredient and product evaluations of material in the marketplace to assist the consultants and company in choosing the most appropriate sources of nutrients and supplements for their clients
- Maintain the Dalex feed database to accurately reflect the nutrient profiles of ingredients used in ration formulation
- Interpret the results of the company record management reports of individual dairy clients data in the RM system and facilitate the report generation. Be involved in the company record management development. This will involve:
- Continue to find and correct issues with the current program. This will be accomplished by using the program and reacting to feedback from the consultants as to things that they would like to see changed.
- Work with the IT group to implement new concepts and ideas.
- Dry matter intake data into RM
- Milk Plant data downloads of production and lab data if possible
- Integration with Dalex for Ration to Production Relationships
Product Formulation. Product formulation is essential to delivering the consultants recommendations to their clients and returning compensation from the client. Products must be verified for accuracy, entered to pricing and production system and labeled appropriately for sale. This is a priority activity as products cannot be produced and sold without formulation, pricing and authorization to the plant.
Interactions with suppliers are a key component of this position. The consultants rely on company to screen products from a scientific perspective. They
rely on the company to be the barrier between themselves and suppliers and products that they do not have an interest in. They also have come to respect that if we bring a product forward to them there is a basis for this consideration. We need to maintain that respect without being a true barrier to ideas. Attending academic meetings and occasionally attending supplier conferences will help improve understanding of supplier offerings.
Travel to the regions. Understanding the needs of our consulting group can only be best be assessed by spending time in the territory with them. The
activity in the field builds a relationship with consultants that cannot be developed from a distance. The region visits are more of a function to see how we can service our consultants and learn from what they are doing to help others. Technical support and advising is also an important aspect to these visits. The ability to associate customers and their operations with records and rations is an advantage when supporting the consultant. This position will
involve approximately 30% travel.
Development of the Consultants. This position would be responsible for assessing areas of opportunity for technical growth and development for the consultants. While traveling to the territories, this individual will coach the consultants to increase their observation skills on the farm, their opportunity analysis and their ability to identify true bottlenecks. When there are areas of opportunity identified for a number of the consultants, work with the RBM to plan proper training for the team. Based on the knowledge of the teams ability, this individual will also offer suggestions as the best conference or training for each consultant to grow according to their development plan.
