Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

  • Perform regular annual exams on patients (e.g. pap smears).
  • Analyze records, reports, test results, or examination information to diagnose medical condition of patient.
  • Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients.
  • Collect, record, and maintain patient information, such as medical histories, reports, and examination results.
  • Monitor patients over the course of pregnancies.
  • Treat infections of the cervix, ovaries and fallopian tubes.
  • Identify cancerous growths within the reproductive system.
  • Refer patient to medical specialist or other practitioner when necessary.

  • Clinical Expertise in Obstetrics

    • Knowledge of the pregnancy process, including prenatal care, labor management, delivery techniques, and postpartum care.
    • Ability to identify and manage complications in pregnancy such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, placental issues, and preterm labor.
    • Expertise in performing routine and emergency cesarean sections (C-sections), assisting with vaginal births, and managing complex deliveries.
    • Skilled in providing fertility care, including diagnosing infertility issues and offering treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI).
  • Gynecological Expertise

    • Proficiency in diagnosing and treating menstrual disorders, endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
    • Knowledge in managing reproductive health issues, including contraception, menopause, hormonal therapy, and sexual health.
    • Ability to perform gynecological surgeries like hysterectomy, laparoscopy, colposcopy, and biopsy.
    • Expertise in diagnosing and managing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and cervical cancer (e.g., through Pap smears and HPV testing).
  • Surgical Skills

    • Advanced surgical skills to perform both minimally invasive procedures (such as laparoscopy and robotic surgery) and open surgeries (like hysterectomy or myomectomy).
    • Proficiency in gynecologic oncology procedures, including the removal of cancerous tissues or organs.
    • Ability to handle emergency obstetric procedures, such as assisting in high-risk deliveries and performing emergency cesarean sections.
  • Patient Education and Counseling

    • Providing prenatal education to expectant mothers, covering topics like childbirth preparation, prenatal nutrition, and managing labor.
    • Offering counseling on family planning, birth control options, and counseling patients through menopause, reproductive health changes, or infertility.
    • Helping patients navigate sensitive topics such as sexual health, fertility issues, and chronic reproductive conditions like endometriosis.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration

    • Working closely with other healthcare providers, including maternal-fetal medicine specialists, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, and nurses to provide comprehensive care to pregnant women.
    • Collaborating with oncologists, urologists, and dietitians when managing complex reproductive health conditions or preparing for surgery.
  • Ethical and Compassionate Care

    • Providing care with empathy and respect, understanding the emotional and psychological aspects of both obstetric and gynecological care.
    • Addressing issues such as pregnancy loss, miscarriage, and difficult reproductive choices with sensitivity and compassion.
  • Research and Evidence-Based Practice

    • Staying updated with the latest medical research, technologies, and treatment guidelines in the fields of obstetrics and gynecology.
    • Engaging in clinical research to improve women's health care, including exploring new treatment options for conditions like endometriosis, fibroids, and infertility.

  • Obstetric Care

    • Prenatal Care: Providing regular checkups and testing throughout pregnancy, ensuring the health of both mother and baby.
    • Monitoring Fetal Development: Using ultrasound and other diagnostic tools to track the growth and development of the fetus.
    • Labor and Delivery: Assisting with labor, performing deliveries, managing complications during labor, and providing postpartum care to the mother and newborn.
    • Postpartum Care: Ensuring the recovery of the mother after childbirth, managing any complications, and providing breastfeeding support and family planning counseling.
  • Gynecological Care

    • Routine Examinations: Performing annual gynecological exams, including Pap smears, pelvic exams, and breast exams.
    • Diagnosing and Treating Disorders: Addressing common conditions like fibroids, PCOS, cervical dysplasia, and pelvic infections.
    • Managing Menstrual and Hormonal Disorders: Treating irregular menstruation, endometriosis, and premature menopause.
    • Sexual and Reproductive Health: Providing advice on contraception, sexual health, and infertility treatments.
  • Surgical Interventions

    • Gynecologic Surgery: Performing surgeries such as hysterectomies, myomectomies (removal of fibroids), laparoscopies, and tubal ligations.
    • Emergency Obstetrics Surgery: Managing obstetric emergencies such as ectopic pregnancies, ruptured membranes, or uterine rupture and performing emergency cesarean sections.
  • Patient Counseling and Education

    • Offering counseling services on birth control, fertility treatments, pregnancy options, and menopause.
    • Educating patients about healthy pregnancy habits, breastfeeding, postpartum recovery, and self-care.
  • Research and Academic Contributions

    • Engaging in research on women's health, reproductive technologies, and new methods of treatment or prevention.
    • Educating medical students and residents, and contributing to ongoing research in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.
