Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

  • To conduct anesthesia for routine and emergency surgical patients resuscitate as a team member and manage critically ill ventilated ICU patients.
  • To conduct assessment & re-assessment for all patients in the OPD, on admission, and prior to any procedure.
  • Provides anesthesia with the full range of anesthetic agents.
  • Provides technical advice and guidance to nursing staff, other specialists and registrars, as required, and provides orientation/training in new techniques and procedures.
  • Interviews patients scheduled for surgery to asses and develop an anesthesia care plan and to establish rapport and allay fear and apprehension.
  • Manage patients during sedation and during the period of actual recovery from sedation and documents monitoring.
  • Sees patients post operatively to evaluate recovery from anesthesia, to assess complications and make recommendation as indicated.
  • Supervises and maintains appropriate documentation on the “controlled drugs” for the division in the Obstetrical operating theaters and main O.R.
  • Keeps current with new procedures and techniques in the field of Anesthesia.
  • Takes active part in the teaching of junior anesthesiologists and other nursing staff.
  • To conduct anesthesia services in appropriate dosages for all age groups in routine or emergency situations.
  • Actively participate in CPR.
  • Provides on-call emergency services of anesthesia services.
  • Graduate from an accredited school of Medicine with an MBBS degree .
  • Post graduate degree in Anesthesia (MD Anesthesiology) or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years full time in the practice of anesthesiology post MD (Anesthesiology) or post certification by American Board of Anesthesiology or post Fellow of the College of Anesthetists of the Royal College of Surgeon (FCA / FRCA) examination or equivalent .
  • Comprehensive knowledge of safe use of all general anesthetic agents, techniques and methods currently accepted in the practice of anesthesia.
  • Ability in the absence of the Chief Anesthesiologist, to provide on-site assessment of personnel, equipment and overall anesthesia environment.
  • Has high standard of professionalism.

Desired candidate profile

  • Advanced Knowledge of Anesthesia Techniques

    • Expertise in general anesthesia, regional anesthesia (e.g., spinal, epidural), and local anesthesia to manage pain and consciousness during surgical procedures.
    • Knowledge of anesthesia pharmacology, including understanding the effects, doses, and potential interactions of anesthetic agents, analgesics, and sedatives.
    • Skilled in induction, maintenance, and emergence from anesthesia, ensuring smooth transitions throughout the procedure.
  • Preoperative Evaluation and Planning

    • Comprehensive preoperative assessment of patients, including review of medical history, medications, allergies, physical examination, and any underlying conditions (e.g., heart disease, respiratory issues, diabetes).
    • Developing personalized anesthesia plans based on patient risk factors, surgical complexity, and patient preferences.
    • Coordinating with surgeons and other specialists to ensure that the anesthesia plan is tailored to the procedure's specific requirements.
  • Intraoperative Anesthesia Management

    • Monitoring and maintaining anesthesia levels during surgery to ensure patient comfort and safety.
    • Managing airway control, ventilation, and respiratory support (e.g., mechanical ventilation) to ensure adequate oxygenation and prevent complications such as hypoxia or hypercapnia.
    • Administering appropriate anesthetic agents, such as inhalational anesthetics, intravenous anesthetics, or neuromuscular blocking agents, as required by the procedure.
  • Vital Signs Monitoring and Crisis Management

    • Continuously monitoring vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, end-tidal CO2, and temperature during surgery to detect any deviations from normal parameters.
    • Being prepared to intervene in cases of complications such as hypotension, arrhythmias, respiratory distress, or anaphylactic reactions.
    • Proficient in resuscitation techniques (e.g., CPR, ACLS) to manage cardiac arrest, airway obstruction, or bleeding.
