Roles and responsibilities

As a Carpenter, you will be responsible for maintaining the building and facilities, build required items, and maintain carpentry tools to deliver an excellent Guest and Member experience. A Carpenter will also be required to prepare preventative maintenance schedules and perform inspections. Specifically, you will be responsible for performing the following tasks to the highest standards:

• Maintaining the building and facilities including doors, windows, furniture and other items
• Complete the Guest room maintenance schedule on time
• Build required items including specialty furniture
• Operate and maintain carpentry tools and equipment
• Assist with the delivery of other related services
• Keep a daily log of tasks
• Prepare a preventative maintenance schedule
• Take measurements, install fixtures, and make necessary adjustments
• Ensure quality inspections are carried out in line with company standards
• Ensure good relationships are built with internal and external customers
• Perform special projects and other responsibilities as assigned
• Follow all Health and Safety rules within the Department and the hotel

A Carpenter is a skilled tradesperson responsible for constructing, installing, and repairing structures and fixtures made from wood, drywall, and other materials. Carpentry work spans a variety of industries, from residential and commercial construction to custom furniture making. Below are the key skills required for the role of a Carpenter:

Carpentry Techniques and Skills

• Woodworking: Proficient in working with different types of wood, including cutting, shaping, sanding, and finishing, to create structures, furniture, and fixtures.
• Framing and structural work: Expertise in building and installing wooden frames for buildings, including walls, floors, roofs, and ceilings.
• Joinery: Skilled in using advanced joinery techniques such as dovetail, mortise and tenon, and lap joints to ensure strong, durable structures.
• Cabinet making: Ability to craft and install custom cabinetry, shelves, and storage solutions.
• Finish carpentry: Experience with the installation of detailed wood trim, moldings, baseboards, door frames, and windows, adding aesthetic appeal to interior spaces.
• Flooring installation: Knowledge of installing wood flooring, parquet, laminate, or engineered wood products.
• Roofing: Experience with framing and installing wooden roofs, including trusses and rafters, ensuring structural integrity and compliance with safety standards.

Tool and Equipment Proficiency

• Hand tools: Skilled in using traditional hand tools such as hammers, chisels, saws, planes, levels, and squares.
• Power tools: Proficient with power tools like circular saws, drills, jigsaws, sanders, and nail guns to efficiently carry out carpentry tasks.
• Measuring tools: Use of measuring tools such as tape measures, calipers, rulers, and laser levels to ensure precise measurements for cuts and installations.
• Safety equipment: Knowledge of proper safety equipment and techniques, including the use of eye protection, ear protection, gloves, and dust masks when operating machinery and power tools.
• Saws and cutting tools: Expertise in various saws (table saws, miter saws, band saws) for making precise cuts, including angles and joints.

Blueprint and Technical Drawing Interpretation

• Reading blueprints: Ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings, blueprints, and plans to accurately follow specifications for construction.
• Measuring and layout: Accurately measure, mark, and layout dimensions on materials and job sites to meet building codes and project requirements.
• Estimating materials: Assess the quantity and type of materials required for a job, helping to create accurate cost estimates and avoid waste.
• Structural integrity: Ensure all structures, furniture, and fixtures are built to code and are structurally sound.

Mathematical and Analytical Skills

• Precision and accuracy: Strong understanding of math, including geometry and basic trigonometry, to make accurate measurements and cuts.
• Leveling and alignment: Ability to level, plumb, and align structures and installations correctly, ensuring stability and aesthetic appeal.
• Calculations: Calculate material quantities, measurements, and angles required for specific tasks (e.g., flooring, framing, roof pitch).
