Desired candidate profile

. Protection System Design and Engineering

  • Proficiency in designing protection schemes for electrical power systems, ensuring that appropriate protection devices are selected and properly configured.
  • Knowledge of various protection relays, such as overcurrent, distance, differential, earth fault, and busbar protection.
  • Designing coordination of protective relays to avoid unnecessary outages and minimize downtime by ensuring selectivity, i.e., isolating the faulted section without affecting the entire system.
  • Ability to calculate fault currents, select protection settings, and integrate protective systems with automation and control systems.

2. Relay Settings and Coordination

  • Expertise in setting and configuring protection relays according to system design requirements and fault tolerance criteria.
  • Understanding time-current characteristic curves for protection devices and ensuring correct coordination of relay settings to discriminate between faults and avoid unnecessary tripping.
  • Familiarity with industry standards for protection coordination, such as IEC 61850, IEEE C37.2, and ANSI device numbers.
  • Ability to perform relay testing and settings verification using tools like Omicron, Fluke, and Test Equipment.

3. Fault Analysis and Protection Study

  • Conducting fault analysis, including short circuit calculations, relay coordination studies, and selectivity studies, to determine the most appropriate protection strategy.
  • Performing power system stability analysis to ensure protection settings prevent cascading failures and optimize fault detection times.
  • Using simulation software such as ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, and PSCAD to model fault conditions and evaluate protection system performance.
  • Analyzing historical fault data to assess the effectiveness of existing protection schemes and recommending adjustments.

4. Power System Protection Standards

  • Familiarity with national and international standards (e.g., IEEE, IEC, NERC, ANSI) that govern the design and implementation of protection systems in electrical power networks.
  • Ensuring protection systems comply with relevant regulations and safety standards.
  • Understanding the code of practice for electrical installations and safety, including grounding and bonding requirements.

5. Equipment Protection

  • Designing protection schemes for various types of electrical equipment, including generators, transformers, circuit breakers, busbars, and motors.
  • Specifying appropriate protection devices for overload, overvoltage, undervoltage, earth fault, phase imbalance, and reverse power.
  • Ensuring protection of electrical components from faults like short circuits, earth faults, and differential faults, which can cause significant damage to expensive equipment.
