Roles and responsibilities
-
Electrical System Design
- Lead the design of electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, grounding, circuit protection, and control systems.
- Prepare and review electrical design layouts, schematics, wiring diagrams, and one-line diagrams using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, or Electrical CAD).
- Develop electrical system specifications, including sizing and selection of electrical equipment such as transformers, generators, distribution boards, and panels.
-
Design Compliance and Standards
- Ensure that electrical designs comply with industry standards and codes, such as NEC (National Electrical Code), IEC, ANSI, IEEE, and local regulatory requirements.
- Stay current with electrical design codes, standards, and regulations, ensuring designs reflect the most up-to-date best practices.
-
Collaboration and Coordination
- Work closely with electrical engineers, project managers, architects, and other disciplines (mechanical, civil, structural) to integrate electrical systems into the overall project design.
- Coordinate with contractors, clients, and suppliers to ensure that electrical designs are implemented as per specifications and in a cost-effective manner.
- Provide technical support during project execution, ensuring designs are followed during construction and commissioning phases.
-
Load Calculations and Equipment Selection
- Perform electrical load calculations to determine the appropriate sizing of cables, circuits, and electrical equipment.
- Select electrical equipment and materials based on project needs, safety requirements, energy efficiency, and budget considerations.
- Design backup power systems, including generators and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) for critical systems.
-
Project Documentation and Reporting
- Prepare detailed electrical design documentation, including drawings, material specifications, and equipment schedules.
- Review and approve vendor submittals and shop drawings, ensuring they meet design requirements.
- Generate reports for compliance, cost estimates, progress tracking, and project documentation.
-
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
- Design energy-efficient electrical systems, implementing solutions that reduce energy consumption and minimize environmental impact.
- Incorporate renewable energy solutions (e.g., solar power, energy storage) into designs where applicable.
- Recommend ways to optimize existing electrical systems for better performance and lower operating costs.
-
Risk Assessment and Safety
- Conduct safety and risk assessments to identify potential hazards associated with electrical systems and ensure that designs meet safety standards.
- Develop safety protocols and contribute to hazard analysis (HAZOP, FMEA) during the design phase.
- Ensure compliance with electrical safety standards, such as grounding, electrical shock prevention, and fire protection.
