Roles and responsibilities
SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS:
The Psychological Counsellor will provide mental health support and psychological services to students and individuals with disabilities within the Center for Inclusive Learning at Ajman University. The role focuses on supporting the emotional, psychological, and mental well-being of students, promoting inclusivity, and developing tailored therapeutic approaches. The counselor will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to create a supportive environment for individuals with diverse needs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct psychological assessments to identify individual needs and provide appropriate support plans.
- Provide individual and group counseling sessions to students and individuals with disabilities, addressing issues related to mental health, emotional well-being, academic stress, and personal development.
- Develop and implement tailored psychological interventions and support plans for students with varying levels of abilities.
- Use evidence-based therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychotherapy, and mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques to assist students.
- Monitor and evaluate the progress of students, adjusting therapeutic strategies as needed.
- Collaborate with other departments, academic staff, and external specialists to ensure comprehensive care and support.
- Promote a culture of inclusivity and well-being across the university, ensuring that psychological services are accessible to all students, especially those with disabilities.
- Advise on mental health accommodations and support for students with disabilities.
- Facilitate workshops, seminars, and support groups to raise awareness about mental health issues, coping strategies, and self-care.
- Work closely with faculty, academic advisors, and student services to ensure holistic support for students.
- Collaborate with external mental health professionals, including psychiatrists and social workers, when needed.
- Maintain open communication with students’ families, respecting confidentiality and ensuring appropriate support.
- Maintain detailed and confidential records of counseling sessions, assessments, and interventions.
- Participate in regular meetings with the Center for Inclusive Learning team to review cases and develop strategies for enhancing student well-being.
- Deliver a variety of services including academic accommodations, personal support, assistive technology, and learning accessibility.
Desired candidate profile
- Master’s in Special Education, Psychology, Counselling, or a related field, PhD’s degree is preferred.
- Valid certification or license in psychological counseling or therapy.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in psychological counseling, preferably with individuals with disabilities or special needs.
- Experience working in a university setting or educational institution is highly desirable.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Strong knowledge of various therapeutic approaches and mental health interventions.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills.
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse population, including individuals with physical and cognitive disability, and emotional disturbance.
- Proficiency in conducting assessments and developing individualized treatment plans.
- Ability to manage sensitive issues with tact, empathy, and cultural awareness.
- Fluency in both Arabic and English.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
- Limited physical effort is required.
- No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
