Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

AECOM are currently seeking an electrically bias Technical Director, to join our Building Engineering team. The Technical Director is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing and guiding the electrical design team. The role involves driving innovation, ensuring technical excellence, and managing the design and development of electrical systems and components for various projects. The Technical Director will collaborate with cross-functional teams, clients, and stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions that meet project specifications and timelines.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the design and development of electrical systems and components from concept to production.
  • Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and meet all technical and safety standards.
  • Collaborate with project managers to allocate resources and manage project timelines.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to the design team on complex electrical engineering challenges.
  • Stay current with industry trends, technologies, and best practices.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Collaborate with other departments (e.g., mechanical, structural engineering, architecture) to ensure cohesive and integrated solutions.
  • Implement and maintain quality assurance processes for electrical design.
  • Conduct design reviews, audits, and risk assessments to ensure the reliability and safety of designs.
  • Develop and manage the electrical design budget, including resource allocation and cost control.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Proficiency in electrical design software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks Electrical, EPLAN).
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, circuits, and components.
  • 20+ years of experience in electrical design, with at least 5 years in a leadership or management role.

Desired candidate profile

1. Technical Expertise in Electrical Engineering

  • Electrical Design and Analysis: In-depth knowledge of electrical engineering principles, circuit design, electrical distribution systems, power generation, and transmission.
  • System Integration: Ability to design and integrate complex electrical systems, ensuring compatibility with other systems within a project.
  • Power Systems: Understanding of power generation, transmission, and distribution systems, as well as renewable energy systems like solar, wind, and battery storage.
  • Control Systems: Expertise in automated control systems, PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers), SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems, and other automation technologies.
  • High-Voltage and Low-Voltage Systems: Familiarity with both high-voltage and low-voltage electrical systems, protection circuits, transformers, and distribution panels.
  • Energy Efficiency: Knowledge of energy-saving technologies and practices, including power factor correction, voltage optimization, and energy-efficient designs.
  • Standards and Regulations: Deep understanding of industry standards (IEC, IEEE, NFPA, UL, ANSI, etc.) and local electrical codes, safety standards, and environmental regulations.

2. Leadership and Management Skills

  • Team Leadership: Leading, mentoring, and developing teams of electrical engineers, project managers, and technical staff to ensure successful project execution.
  • Project Management: Experience in overseeing the planning, scheduling, and execution of electrical engineering projects, including budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Working with other departments such as mechanical, civil, and systems engineering teams to ensure projects are aligned with overall goals.
  • Client Relations: Building and maintaining relationships with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure the project's electrical requirements are met.
  • Risk Management: Identifying potential risks in electrical systems and designs and developing mitigation strategies to minimize failures or delays.
  • Decision Making: Making strategic decisions on complex electrical issues and providing guidance for the team.

3. Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking

  • Troubleshooting: Expertise in diagnosing and resolving electrical system failures or issues, both in the design phase and during ongoing operations.
  • Innovative Thinking: Ability to propose innovative solutions for complex electrical problems and design challenges, particularly in large-scale or high-stakes projects.
  • Failure Analysis: Conducting failure analysis to understand the root causes of electrical issues, improving the design or process to avoid future issues.

4. Communication Skills

  • Technical Documentation: Ability to produce clear, comprehensive reports, specifications, and documentation related to electrical systems, designs, and tests.
  • Presentations: Communicating technical concepts and project progress to non-technical stakeholders, clients, and executive teams in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Team Communication: Ensuring effective communication within teams and with other departments, resolving any issues promptly and maintaining project alignment.

5. Industry-Specific Knowledge

  • Industry Trends: Staying current with the latest trends in electrical engineering, such as developments in renewable energy, smart grids, energy storage solutions, and emerging electrical technologies.
  • Electrical Equipment: Familiarity with state-of-the-art electrical equipment, including switchgear, transformers, power generation equipment, and other electrical hardware.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensuring that electrical systems and designs meet all safety requirements and comply with relevant codes and standards, such as OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) or local safety regulations.
