Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

As a Marine Onboard Mechanic at Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island, you will be an integral part of our maritime services team, responsible for ensuring the reliable operation and maintenance of marine engines and onboard systems. Your expertise will contribute to the safety, efficiency, and overall guest experience during marine activities, aligning with the high standards set by Minor Hotels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of marine engines, identifying and resolving any issues promptly.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to perform routine servicing and repairs.
  • Ensure the proper functioning of onboard systems, including electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical components.
  • Troubleshoot and repair any faults on time to minimise downtime.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines, ensuring all onboard mechanical systems meet safety standards.
  • Participate in safety drills and assist with emergencies.
  • Provide technical support to the Boat Skipper and other crew members during marine activities.
  • Assist with the maintenance of marine equipment, including life-saving appliances.
  • Maintain accurate records of all onboard maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and reporting standards.
  • Handle and store tools and spare parts in an organized manner, ensuring their availability for maintenance tasks.
  • Assist in maintaining an inventory of spare parts and equipment.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Marine Onboard Mechanic, preferably in a marine tourism or hospitality setting.
  • Technical certification in marine engineering or a related field.
  • In-depth knowledge of marine engine systems and onboard mechanical systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and emergency response procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Desired candidate profile

1. Technical Expertise in Marine Engines and Systems

  • Deep understanding of both inboard and outboard marine engines, including two-stroke and four-stroke systems.
  • Knowledge of various marine electrical systems, fuel systems, cooling systems, exhaust systems, and navigation equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret marine service manuals, wiring diagrams, and technical schematics to diagnose problems and perform repairs.

2. Troubleshooting and Diagnostic Skills

  • Strong problem-solving abilities to identify mechanical issues, electrical faults, and system failures on watercraft.
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools, such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and pressure gauges, to pinpoint issues in marine engines and systems.
  • Skill in troubleshooting electrical circuits, fuel pumps, ignition systems, and other critical components.

3. Familiarity with Safety and Environmental Regulations

  • Knowledge of marine safety protocols and environmental regulations, particularly regarding fuel handling, emissions, and disposal of waste materials (e.g., oil, batteries).
  • Understanding of safe working practices when handling hazardous materials, such as fuel, oils, and chemicals used in marine equipment.
  • Ability to comply with local, state, and federal regulations to ensure the safety and compliance of vessels.

4. Mechanical Skills

  • Proficient in the use of mechanical tools and equipment to perform maintenance and repair tasks on marine engines and systems.
  • Experience in dismantling, repairing, and reassembling various mechanical components, including engines, drives, gearboxes, and propellers.
  • Ability to replace worn-out parts, such as seals, gaskets, pistons, belts, and bearings, and ensure all components are properly lubricated and functioning.

5. Electrical and Electronics Knowledge

  • Proficient in diagnosing and repairing marine electrical systems, including wiring, batteries, lights, and navigation electronics (e.g., GPS, sonar, radios).
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical systems on boats and ships, including working with circuit boards, fuses, and relays.
  • Familiarity with battery charging systems and electrical charging cycles on marine vessels.

6. Communication and Customer Service Skills

  • Ability to clearly explain technical issues to boat owners or operators, providing recommendations and solutions in non-technical language.
  • Strong customer service orientation, helping clients understand maintenance needs, preventative care, and the importance of system upgrades or repairs.
  • Documenting and reporting all repairs, maintenance schedules, and parts replaced for client records.

7. Physical Stamina and Dexterity

  • The role can require working in confined or uncomfortable spaces, such as engine rooms or under decks, for extended periods of time.
  • Physical stamina is necessary for lifting heavy parts or equipment, working on large vessels, and performing manual tasks such as engine disassembly and reassembly.

8. Time Management and Organization

  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines, especially when working on large-scale repairs or maintenance on vessels.
  • Organizing and maintaining workspaces, tools, and parts to ensure efficiency during repairs and maintenance.
