Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

Service Technician is a professional who provides on-site repair, maintenance, and installation services for various equipment, machinery, or vehicles. Unlike traditional technicians who work from a fixed location, mobile service technicians travel to clients' premises or job sites to diagnose, repair, or service equipment. These professionals are crucial in industries where quick, on-site service is necessary, such as automotive repair, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), appliance repair, and machinery maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

Service and Repair

  • Diagnose Issues: Diagnose mechanical, electrical, or technical issues with machinery, equipment, or vehicles based on customer complaints or inspection.
  • Perform Repairs: Conduct repairs on-site, which may involve replacing parts, fixing mechanical issues, or troubleshooting electrical systems.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and inspections on equipment or vehicles to prevent future breakdowns and ensure optimal performance.
  • Installation: Install new equipment, machinery, or systems as required, ensuring they are set up and functioning correctly.

Customer Interaction

  • Customer Service: Provide excellent customer service by explaining the problem, offering repair options, and answering any questions the customer might have.
  • On-Site Communication: Communicate with customers to gather necessary information about the equipment or issue, and provide clear estimates for repairs and service.
  • Provide Recommendations: Advise customers on proper maintenance techniques, how to prolong the life of their equipment, and any potential upgrades or replacements that may be necessary.

Record Keeping and Documentation

  • Work Orders: Create detailed work orders or reports documenting services performed, parts used, and time spent on repairs.
  • Inventory Management: Keep track of parts and materials used during service calls, and manage inventory to ensure the right parts are available for future service visits.
  • Service Records: Maintain accurate records of customer service history, equipment maintenance schedules, and past repairs.

Travel and Logistics

  • Route Planning: Plan and organize daily routes to efficiently service multiple customers, minimizing travel time and ensuring timely service.
  • Mobile Setup: Equip and maintain the mobile service vehicle with the necessary tools, equipment, and spare parts required for repairs and maintenance.

Safety and Compliance

  • Safety Procedures: Ensure all safety procedures are followed while performing repairs or maintenance, especially when handling dangerous or hazardous equipment.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Follow industry regulations and standards related to repairs, installations, and equipment handling.

Desired candidate profile

  • Technical Knowledge

    • In-depth understanding of mechanical, electrical, or technical systems relevant to the industry (e.g., automotive, HVAC, appliances, etc.).
    • Ability to troubleshoot and repair various types of equipment or machinery efficiently.
  • Problem-Solving

    • Strong diagnostic skills to identify issues and determine the most cost-effective and timely solution.
    • Ability to adapt to new challenges and work with various systems and equipment that may require different repair approaches.

    • Organizational skills for managing multiple appointments, keeping accurate service records, and maintaining inventory.

    • Precise attention to detail when diagnosing problems and performing repairs to ensure the job is done right the first time.
    • Ability to spot potential issues during routine maintenance that could lead to larger problems later.
  • Physical Dexterity

    • Manual dexterity and physical stamina are necessary to perform repairs, especially when working with heavy or bulky equipment.
  • Safety Awareness

    • Knowledge of safety regulations related to the equipment being serviced and the work environment.
    • Ability to maintain a safe working environment while working on-site, including using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
