Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

A Foreman is a supervisory role commonly found in construction, manufacturing, and other industrial settings. The foreman oversees and manages the day-to-day operations on-site, ensuring that work is carried out according to plan, on time, and within budget. They act as the bridge between the workers and the higher management, providing leadership, guidance, and support to the team.

Key Responsibilities

Supervision and Team Leadership

  • Manage Workers: Supervise a team of workers, ensuring they are properly trained, motivated, and working efficiently. This includes directing activities, assigning tasks, and monitoring performance.
  • Monitor Work Progress: Oversee the progress of work on-site, ensuring that tasks are completed according to specifications, schedules, and safety standards.
  • Maintain Discipline: Ensure that workers adhere to safety protocols, company policies, and industry regulations. Address any behavior issues or disputes promptly and fairly.

Project Management

  • Implement Plans: Execute project plans and ensure that all aspects of the project are carried out according to design specifications.
  • Schedule Management: Ensure that the project stays on schedule, adjusting workflows as needed to address delays or unforeseen challenges.
  • Quality Control: Inspect work for quality, ensuring it meets required standards and regulations. Provide feedback to workers to ensure high-quality output.

Safety and Compliance

  • Enforce Safety Standards: Ensure that all workers adhere to safety procedures and regulations. This includes providing safety equipment, training, and maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Conduct Safety Meetings: Hold regular safety briefings with the team to discuss potential hazards, review safety practices, and promote safe working habits.
  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate potential risks on-site, such as unsafe conditions or hazardous materials.

Communication and Reporting

  • Liaison Between Management and Workers: Act as the intermediary between the project manager, construction manager, or senior leadership and the workers on-site.
  • Report Progress: Provide regular updates to upper management on project progress, including completed tasks, upcoming activities, and any issues that may arise.
  • Coordinate with Other Departments: Communicate and coordinate with other departments, such as supply chains, logistics, and client representatives, to ensure smooth project execution.

Resource and Materials Management

  • Manage Supplies and Equipment: Ensure that materials, tools, and equipment are available on-site when needed. This includes coordinating with suppliers, handling inventories, and ensuring proper maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Optimize Resource Usage: Make sure resources are used efficiently, minimizing waste and maximizing productivity.

Problem-Solving and Troubleshooting

  • Address On-Site Issues: Quickly identify and address any issues or problems that arise during the project, such as equipment failure, worker injuries, or delays.
  • Resolve Conflicts: Mediate conflicts between team members and ensure a collaborative and positive working environment.

  • Leadership and Management

    • Ability to motivate and lead a team, ensuring that workers stay focused, productive, and adhere to safety regulations.
    • Strong interpersonal skills to manage relationships with team members and upper management.
  • Project Management

    • Experience with planning, scheduling, and overseeing projects, ensuring tasks are completed on time and within budget.
    • Ability to manage competing priorities and resources efficiently.
  • Technical Knowledge

    • Understanding of the specific industry (e.g., construction, manufacturing, etc.), including the technical requirements, tools, and materials used.
    • Ability to interpret blueprints, plans, and technical drawings.
  • Problem-Solving

    • The ability to think critically and address issues as they arise, ensuring that disruptions don’t affect the project timeline or quality.
    • Conflict resolution skills to handle disputes within the team or with clients effectively.
  • Safety Awareness

    • Knowledge of safety regulations and the ability to enforce safety standards to ensure a secure working environment for all employees.
    • Ability to assess and mitigate potential hazards on-site.
  • Communication Skills

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for clear reporting to management, relaying instructions to workers, and liaising with external stakeholders.
    • Ability to conduct meetings and briefings effectively.
  • Attention to Detail

    • Careful attention to the quality of work being done, ensuring that all tasks are completed according to specifications and industry standards.
    • Ability to identify minor issues early on before they become major problems.
