حول World Food Programme (WFP)

The World Food Programme (WFP) is active in Palestine since 1991. WFP works in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza to meet the food needs of poor and food insecure people. The Country Office is located in Jerusalem and is supported by sub-offices in Gaza, Hebron and Ashdod (port office). WFP employs around 65 staff in Palestine, both national and international. WFP activities focus on assisting people whose ability to buy food has been hampered by poverty brought about by conflict surrounding the occupation of the West Bank and the blockade of the Gaza Strip. Though food is readily available in Palestine, prices are often too high for poor families to afford. WFP also works to enhance their resilience and coping mechanisms and supports the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) national social safety net by strengthening the Government’s capacities. WFP Palestine provides the assistance through • In-kind provision of food where the targeted beneficiaries receive food parcel consisting of wheat flour, pulses, salt and vegetable and • Cash Based Transfers (CBT) where the targeted beneficiaries receive magnetic card issued by WFP Palestine topped-up with a certain value of money to enable them to pay for specific food commodities from contracted retailers / shops. WFP is currently reaching around 350,000 individuals (around 70,000 families) in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Around 70% of WFP’s operations are in the Gaza Strip.
