Job Summary:
The Material Engineer for an Infrastructure Works Project is responsible for overseeing and managing the selection testing and quality control of materials used throughout the construction process. This role ensures that all materials meet the required specifications and standards and are suitable for their intended use in the infrastructure project. The Material Engineer works closely with the project team suppliers and contractors to verify material compliance troubleshoot material-related issues and provide recommendations on material procurement and performance.
Key Job Duties:
- Material Selection & Procurement:
- Assist in selecting materials for the project based on project requirements specifications and industry standards.
- Review and approve material submittals from suppliers to ensure compliance with project specifications and quality standards.
- Ensure that materials are sourced from approved suppliers and meet required regulatory and environmental standards.
- Material Testing & Quality Control:
- Conduct and oversee tests on construction materials (e.g. aggregates concrete asphalt metals) to ensure compliance with quality standards and project specifications.
- Perform laboratory and field testing to assess the physical properties and performance of materials used in the project.
- Monitor the quality of materials during storage and transportation to prevent contamination or degradation.
- Material Performance Monitoring:
- Track and assess the performance of materials throughout the construction process providing recommendations for adjustments or substitutions as necessary.
- Investigate any material failures analyze the root cause and recommend corrective actions or alternative solutions.
- Ensure that all materials used meet the durability safety and environmental requirements set by the project specifications.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain comprehensive records of material testing inspections and approvals ensuring full traceability and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and submit material reports detailing test results performance assessments and any issues or non-conformance related to materials.
- Document and manage material certificates test results and compliance reports ensuring they are available for audit purposes.
- Collaboration & Coordination:
- Coordinate with project managers contractors and suppliers to ensure timely delivery and availability of materials required for the project.
- Work closely with the procurement team to ensure that material specifications are clearly communicated and understood by suppliers.
- Liaise with quality control teams to ensure that materials meet the required standards and do not hinder project progress.
- Material Cost Control & Budgeting:
- Assist in evaluating material costs and provide recommendations for cost-effective alternatives that do not compromise quality or project requirements.
- Monitor material usage and wastage to ensure that the project remains within budget and material efficiency is maximized.
- On-site Material Inspections & Monitoring:
- Conduct regular site inspections to ensure that materials are being stored handled and installed according to project specifications and industry best practices.
- Inspect delivered materials for compliance with approved specifications and report any discrepancies to the project team.
- Monitor material consumption on-site and work with contractors to ensure efficient use of materials.
- Risk Management & Issue Resolution:
- Identify potential risks related to materials such as delays in delivery material shortages or non-compliance with quality standards.
- Develop and implement strategies to mitigate material-related risks ensuring the project timeline and quality are not affected.
- Provide solutions and recommendations when material issues arise including proposing alternative materials or suppliers.
- Environmental & Sustainability Compliance:
- Ensure that the selection and use of materials comply with environmental regulations and sustainability goals of the project.
- Promote the use of sustainable materials and environmentally friendly practices where applicable to reduce the environmental impact of the project.
- Training & Knowledge Sharing:
- Provide training to site engineers contractors and construction teams on material handling testing procedures and quality control measures.
- Stay up to date with the latest developments in material technologies and innovations to incorporate best practices into the project.
- Material Handover & Closeout:
- Assist in the final inspection and quality check of materials upon project completion to ensure that all material requirements have been met.
- Ensure proper documentation for material handover including material warranties specifications and test certificates.
- Ensure all material-related documentation is completed and handed over to the client or relevant stakeholders at project closeout.
Qualifications :
- Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering with 12 years of experience in Construction Supervision and Management.
- Minimum of 5 years of specific experience in material engineering for large-scale infrastructure projects.
- In-depth knowledge of material properties testing methods and quality control procedures for construction materials such as concrete asphalt steel and aggregates.
- Familiarity with relevant industry standards codes and regulations (e.g. ASTM AASHTO ACI).
- Strong project management skills including the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams contractors and suppliers.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound decisions based on technical data.
- Physical ability to conduct on-site inspections and material testing in various construction environments.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
